Internationales, interdisziplinäres Symposium INTERVENTIONEN vom 29. - 31. Okt. 2010,
Universität Paderborn, Kunstsilo, Atelier S1.100

(English version see below)

International and interdisciplinary symposium INTERVENTIONS, Oct. 29 – 31, 2010, Universität Paderborn (Germany)

The symposium endeavours to bring together scientists from different disciplines, artists and curators for an interdisciplinary dialogue on INTERVENTIONS. The symposium refers to a new trend and transnational movement treading the borderline between art, politics and economy.

Interventions became noticeable in different aesthetic and socio-political sectors. Nevertheless this movement could not be described as a phenomenon in terms of an artistic or political formation of groups. Instead, it seems more likely to conceive it as a global counterculture against the neo-liberalism as well as against the well-established art business. Originally emerging from a military background and describing the mediation along with the interference in (critical) situations, the term intervention comprises comparable but at the same time heterogeneous and highly diverse forms of artistic practices. All of them refer to concrete social and political problems and circumstances.

Based on the fact that the major international exhibitions again focus on the political dimensions of art, the symposium asks for the necessity to question and (re-)define its potentials and limits along with its scopes of development and action respectively. Further emphasis is put on the possible transformations amidst the conflicting demands of art, politics and economy. In connection with the reassessment of the historical precursors of the interventionist movement, the symposium aims to promote a historical contextualisation and to seek re-evaluation of actual practices of the avant-gardes and neo-avant-gardes. Additionaly the aim of the symposium is to give a survey of the current conditions of interventions and transgressions of boundaries in the field of exhibition-, culture- and socio-politics and economic developments.
